Acute vertebral osteomyelitis complicating Streptococcus sanguis endocarditis.
The first well documented case of acute pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis presenting as the initial manifestation of Streptococcus sanguis endocarditis is reported. The importance of suspecting vertebral osteomyelitis in the presence of disc infection and the diagnostic value of imaging procedures are underlined.
متن کاملInfective endocarditis due to Streptococcus gallolyticus associated with colonic displasia.
Streptococcus gallolyticus is a microorganism belonging to the Streptococcus bovis I group isolated in humans, bovines and equines pigeons, among other animals. Streptococcus bovis is a Streptococcus strain found in the rumen, and has been isolated in the milk of animals with mastitis. The authors describe a case of an adult immunocompetent patient with underlying valvular heart disease, with b...
متن کاملInfectious endocarditis from Streptococcus bovis associated with colonic carcinoma: case report and literature review.
BACKGROUND Many studies in the literature have warned of the need for investigation of colonic lesions among patients, especially elderly ones, who have bacteremia and/or endocarditis from Streptococcus bovis. Bacteremia and infectious endocarditis from Streptococcus bovis may be related to the presence of neoplastic lesions in the large intestine and hepatic disease. AIM This report describe...
متن کاملPhenotypic characterization of Streptococcus sanguis virulence factors associated with bacterial endocarditis.
Certain strains of Streptococcus sanguis adhere (Adh+) selectively to human platelets and, in plasma, induce them to aggregate (Agg+) into in vitro thrombi. In this study, we examined 18 recent endocarditis and dental plaque isolates of microorganisms that were biotyped as S. sanguis for coexpression of platelet interactivity phenotypes with another possible virulence factor in bacterial endoca...
متن کاملRole of granulocytes in experimental Streptococcus sanguis endocarditis.
We investigated the role of granulocytes during the induction and course of experimental Streptococcus sanguis endocarditis in rabbits by depleting blood granulocytes with nitrogen mustard. The induction of the endocarditis was not influenced by granulocytopenia: the 50% infectious dose was 5.4 X 10(4) colony-forming units in normal and granulocytopenic rabbits. However, granulocytopenia influe...
